Being natural is simply a pose, and the most irritating pose I know.
from the book "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde
Being natural is simply a pose, and the most irritating pose I know.
Each man lived his own life and paid his own price for living it. The only pity was one had to pay so often for a single fault. One had to pay over and over again, indeed. In her dealings with man, Destiny never closed her accounts.
Then I feel that I have given away my whole soul to someone who treats it as if it were a flower to put in his coat, a bit of decoration to charm his vanity, an ornament for a summer's day.
The commonest thing is delightful if one only hides it.
When I like someone a lot I never say their name to anyone: it would be like giving part of them away. I've learnt to love the secret: it seems to me like the only thing that can make misterious - or marvellous - modern life.
Lord Henry: All i want now is to look at life. You may come and look at it with me, if you care.
But the bravest man amongst us is afraid of himself. The mutilation of the savage has its tragic survival in the self-denial that mars our lives. We are punished for our refusals. Every impulse that we strive to strangle broods in the mind and poisons us. The body sins once, and has done with its sin, for action is a mode of purification. Nothing remains then but the recollection of a pleasure, or the luxury of a regret. The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself, with desire for what its monstrous laws have made monstrous and unlawful. It has been said that the great events of the world take place in the brain. It is in the brain, and the brain only, that the great sins of the world take place also. (from "The Picture of Dorian Gray")
The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.
There is no such thing as a good influence. Because to influence a person is to give him one's own soul.
It is only shallow people who require years to get rid of an emotion. A man who is master of
himself, can end sorrow as easily as he can invent a pleasure. I don't want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, enjoy them and dominate them.
